AI vs. Humans' Biases
There is a profound ongoing discussion on the potential poor functionality and biases of AI systems. Nevertheless, it is of utmost importance to mention that deliberations on bias and ethics within AI systems tend to be more pronounced than for human professional behaviour that is laden with biases and errors. Consider, for example, the technology sector. So many horrendous choices have been made, mostly by overconfident managers and executives who thought they knew what they were doing. The gap concerning the level of attention paid to the workings of the AI systems, as opposed to the human-made decisions like employment and strategic decisions, poses fundamental issues regarding where we need to direct our efforts in terms of solving systemic biases. Although relevant, the arguments concerning the ethics of AI should not distract us from analyzing and tackling structural biases that exist or are perpetuated through human decision-making. This is important when subjective elements such as cultural fit are considered acceptable evaluation standards in decision-making.
The Horrible Capability of Humans to Act Inhumanely
I can't tell you where to start pondering this idea. What pains me is the fact that we human beings have the exceptional capacity to treat another human being in the worst way possible and still consider ourselves to be morally superior. I vividly recall this incident. I was reading about a sociological study where they found out that people would willingly administer electric shocks to others just because a person in a white coat told them to. Are we really that concerned about AI going haywire? Have you ever witnessed the sensitivity that accompanies people's opinions on X (Twitter)? I have lost count of how many times I have seen polite people transform into complete demons. Let's just say it's enough to make you dizzy with all the cognitive dissonance.
The Constructed AI Ethical Mirror
Any temperature or calorimeter will always reflect the societal currents of those who perpetuated it. As claimed, AI is often said to have the same prejudice bias as in modern society. AI is a reflection of ourselves. AI possesses the tendency to expose the nondescript aspects of contemporary culture. For example, the implementation of AI technology in the recruitment process can reveal aspects of past hiring decisions that seemingly appear to be non-patterned. These biases are not inventions of the AI. It is respectable to expose the unseen frameworks. This is like being given information about what has to be improved; the first shock might be daunting, but it allows you to deal with it when you accept the reality. AI tends to outline systematic biases in an organization's functionalities. Such revelations constitute an opportunity for bias correction only if the organization is willing to accept that it operates in denial of systemic structural problems. The problem does not rely on AI; rather, it is how the institute acts on the information AI provides about self-imposed processes and constructs. A technological mirror enables an organization to evaluate its processes and structures for gap analysis and propose improvements in its systems.
Dealing with Humanity in Fresh Ideas
Now, it gets intriguing, and I mean really intriguing. For a while now, I constantly pondered this. Honestly, it was during the part of my existential crises that hit me around 3 in the morning. Why do we refer to the word humane so often? Well, allow me to tell you, the so-called human judgment is usually a sophisticated way of saying, "It's dependent on the breakfast I had and whether my cat was friendly toward me this morning." This is why humane is a term that has existed for a long time. Trust me, I have seen it in use. For example, some physicians make different decisions before and after their coffee break, whereas AI systems guarantee constant operations. The truth is, being humanitarian in the genuine sense of the word has nothing to do with instincts or affection. I know that might be difficult for some to accept. It is about being balanced and, therefore, uninvolved, which, ironically, machines are better able to fulfil than we humans.
Beyond the Divide Dividing Humans from AI
Regarding this issue, let us be frank: we are missing the point entirely. The conversation should not be centred around whether or not AI is human enough to result in this debate. The more important question should be how AI can help enhance Humanity. And no, I am not talking about some fairy tale vision of the future where robots do our thinking for us. I mean in the practical sense of automated systems that mask candidates' identities to minimize discrimination during the hiring phase. Having seen it work, I should admit that it is pretty impressive. Have you heard what my grandmother had to say? "Who is right pales in comparison to what is right." My grandmother is a wise woman. It has been achieved through painstakingly and carefully orchestrated collaboration that human intelligence and AI can live in a properly balanced future together.
